I soon realize after a two weeks into the program that General Assembly is more of a cash-grabbing company. The admission process is a joke, they just accept whoever willing to pay. The instructor is far from quality. Don't expect to get a job or thinking that General Assembly is a good name to have on your resume.

I went to the data science part time course in Santa Monica. The experience was more than what I expected from a part time course. The teacher was great and taught me a lot about Data Science and built the foundation of my knowledge, helping me land a data scientist job after another year of self-studying. GA boot camp is great, but I think it also depends on your luck. A HUGE part of the experience is determined by the instructor, and I think their instructors are always on a rotation or part-time basis. My teacher has since left GA so there's that.

I want to say that my instructor and his assistant for the course, while I was dissatisfied with the overall experience, were kind people who really had good senses of how to lead a lesson and how to progress through the curriculum. GA, although it did not set me up for success in the working world of software development, did do a good job at laying out the foundations of my education. But let me move on fully to the negative side.

GA marketed itself as a course that would prepare graduates to get hired in the industry right after completing the course. When I asked the person interviewing me to join the program what I would need to continue to learn after my class ended, he said that I would leave GA with the tools I needed to work in tech. But at best, my classmates got jobs after 4-5 months of searching (and this was early 2018, in a very positive economy for job seekers, no less!). At worst, people wound up taking several-month internships that led nowhere, or just gave up and went back to work in different fields. Many of the people who found jobs didn't wind up working in Chicago. This leads me to what I feel is the underlying problem of what GA in Chicago does. They're simply not connected with the right people in Chicago's web development sector to push their graduates as real candidates for jobs.

Employers in Chicago don't trust that GA grads are ready to contribute in their organizations. And you know what - they're probably right. While GA gives a decent survey of necessary skills in web development, it doesn't teach the computer science fundamentals that many organizations demand knowledge of in a technical interview. And GA doesn't keep up well enough with what technologies are vital to know as a young programmer in real time - I left my program without any exposure to Docker or Redux, which have both proven indispensable to know for any chance at breaking into the industry.

But stepping back from those specifics, the entire careers process at GA seemed incredibly ineffectual while I was there. We were prepped to go out into the wider world, apply and interview, without any organization really looking to hire someone who had attended a GA bootcamp. And that's because GA in Chicago had not primed employers in the city to look for talent coming out of the program.

Course: Digital Marketing. Year: 2017 (April – June). Lecturer: Howard **. Company Assigned to: Pollen & Grace - The course materials were excellent, of a similar standard, to that of a master’s degree. The practical hands on experience, across all the major social media channels was great. Although I had some experience, the course was advanced in some respects. For example the e-Commerce, introduction to automation tools used in social media, content creation and CRM. The candidates, on the course came from a wide variety of industry sectors, with varying degree of expertise in digital marketing.

For the duration of the course, I was assigned to a company called Pollen & Grace. They were very gracious to agree to collaborate with me on devising their digital strategy. As a result of the course, I’ve set up a blog called Fluxblog.co.uk and I plan to set up my own business as I have not been in a position to secure a new role. Participating, on the Digital Marketing course was an excellent decision. I only wish, I could have completed some of the other available courses. Keep up the fantastic work!!

I took the Data Science Immersive course at General Assembly's New York City campus. It was a full-time, 3-month course featuring connected classrooms across the US. I came in with programming experience but little in the way of analytics or statistics experience. First we went in - depth around basic models and code that we'd need to know, then we covered a broader range of machine learning algorithms and topics that we should be aware of. Not all topics in the broader range applied to everyone but getting a little experience in each was a good way to decide if I wanted to look into them more. The pace of the class is fast and if you don't stay on top of things, you can get a little lost. That said, the resources GA provides are very helpful for keeping you on track. They care about imparting knowledge but also about the students themselves.

Data Science - Studied onsite in London on the part-time course. The pre-work material was comprehensive and of high quality. The course material, lessons and homework were well-paced and at a good level - challenging but achievable. I was pleased to have chosen the part-time course and that I was not working full-time at the same time because a lot of material was covered - I feel confident about the topics covered but will need to revisit them again to take it all in properly. The teacher and assistance was helpful both in the lessons and outside. I will probably take another course in a different subject in the same format because I feel the structure worked well for me and it was an enjoyable experience.

It's been about a month since I finished my course, and I've been waiting to drop this review somewhere meaningful. Starting out, the course moved at a slow pace, which I understood as a slow ramp up to the actual meet. What I ended up realizing was that this wasn't really ramping up to anything worth nearly $4000. There was virtually no mentor time outside of class besides a 30 minute window before start time, and the course materials themselves were lacking any serious depth. I'm aware that this was a part time course, but for the amount of money that was paid, you would expect a serious amount of reference material, and at least generous voluntary mentor time with the instructor.

Not only that, the lesson materials themselves contained ads for software that an entry level UX designer would never need or think to use. I found that extremely distasteful, to sneak advertisements inside course material. The instructor was clearly pretty jaded due to their long time in the industry, and at one point even admitted that UX design was not something they were passionate about, but was just a career. I understand that GA wants to be realistic as far as job prospects, but putting a jaded, burnt out instructor in an entry level course can only turn people away from the field. Thankfully, UX design is something I'm actually interested in, but that attitude definitely had me second guessing for a little while. From an educational perspective, that is unacceptable.

I feel like I spent the downpayment on a car for a lesson series that could be offered online for about $50-$100 (at the worst). I sincerely hope that this was an isolated case, but I absolutely feel ripped off and would not recommend anyone take the part time UX design course. Maybe the full time immersion is different, but given what I saw, I would absolutely never spend that kind of money for the type of quality that General Assembly put in front of me.

I had a great experience while attending classes to complete the certification, but have felt since completion that GA has not been diligent in assisting with career planning or placement. Data Analytics course in the NYC office - We did not have enough resource materials to reference, not enough explanation in class and sometimes too much (or too little) time spent on exercises, lack of responses to emails/chat questions (there's a need for clarity on when TAs will be online to respond). There's a lack of clear and concise expectations (due dates, clarity on projects/homework, etc). Some lessons jump all over the place and lack clear direction and there's minimal organization (sometimes lessons are not posted for us to follow along with). Our first onboarding was assigned on a Friday night and due Monday (for an assumed 15 hours of coursework).

This is some of the feedback from others in the class: "It often feels like there is no correlation between the class and out of class assignments." "I didn't take a class to teach myself." "I feel like he doesn't have a point when he teaches, just teaches us whatever comes into his mind." "I pretty much had to teach myself via YouTube or the videos from Schoology [program that houses our assignments and lessons]." "[Our first big project is] wildly vague and extraordinarily frustrating." "It really isn't much to do this project... we just need the correct guidance."

Very little knowledge obtained compared to self study - I took the Web Development Immersive bootcamp in Seattle around the end of 2016. It was a ** show. The instructors are god awful at teaching. Just because they are devs doesn't mean they should be teaching people coding. I felt shamed for asking lots of questions, and didn't feel comfortable asking for help from the two instructors, Brandi and Steve, because of their attitudes toward me.

Trying to stuff 6 different languages and 3 different frameworks all in 12 weeks of study is ridiculous. Just teach html/css/and heavy on javascript. WHY THE ** WERE WE TAUGHT RUBY??? WHY WERE WE TAUGHT ANGULARJS?? Angular2 literally was the latest version released at the time and React was the most in demand front end framework at the time (and still is) and you taught us AngularJS? Why? Your course tries so hard to shove as much info in such a short time, when you SHOULD focus on just the main three, and make sure every student is capable and feels good about all three. 12,000 bucks for this course was a complete joke. I wish I picked a different bootcamp or just studied on my own.

Attended the Atlanta GA campus for Web Development Immersive. Started off well, fast paced and challenging. But for me become too fast paced and forced to move on to new material too soon. As the weeks went on, the instructors become more withdrawn to the point both were more concerned seeking their next employment rather than taking the time to give assistance. Became very frustrating. Once the program ended, turns out the so called “booming” tech industry wanted people with experience. Not new people from a boot camp. Positives: 1) Really enjoyed my Data Science Immersive course, approach to instruction, instructors, and classmates. 2) Learned a lot and gave me valuable skills and insights applicable to my career path. Negatives: 1) I have not landed a full-time Data Science or Analytics job yet after more than a year of active seeking. Unless one already has a programming or mathematical background, the likelihood of transitioning to a Data Science career, at least in Atlanta, Georgia, is slim.

2) General Assembly's "Outcomes" department which to connect students with businesses actively seeking data scientists was an absolute disaster. The person responsible for the "Outcomes" department at the Atlanta chapter only specialized in soft skills and made no effort to gain attention from businesses and other organizations to us students. She also shortly left 4 months after my certification and "Outcomes" was left with virtually no effort to press forward. My understanding is General Assembly is taking steps now to rectify the problem for Data Science Immersive students. But for me personally and professionally, it is likely too little too late. I am still grateful for my experience at General Assembly though wish the organization gave significantly more effort to helping Data Science Immersive students and alumni land their first jobs in the profession.

I studied Web Development Immersive, now called Software Engineering Immersive with a new curriculum, at GA London in the UK in 2017, cohort 26. I was awarded an Opportunity Fund fellowship, likely because of my prior experience and potential, and the fact that I'm entirely self-taught. So I wasn't asked to pay for my course, I would never have been able to access such an education without the Fund. My various schools didn't ever have the computers needed for this kind of education.

The WDI course material and the working environment were perfect. The tutors are amazing, great teaching and interpersonal skills, and as ex-students they are usually uniquely positioned to teach this material. Any immersive course at GA is culmination of all the things a person will need to become a proficient developer. In my opinion, it's by far the best of all the coding bootcamps. It's very hard, demanding. If you have the determination to see it through, you can make a career out of nothing in a couple of months.

I attended GA's Web Development Immersive course in Denver in 2017. I chose General Assembly because they had a partnership with a bank that did private loans, which I needed. The cherry on top was my interaction with their admissions team. She bent over backwards to help me get setup and prepared for the class. In fact everyone I had contact with was kind and I got the distinct impression that they genuinely wanted to help me.

My experience in the class was the same. Not to say that the class didn't kick my butt and I felt like 'I can't do this' more than once during my time there, but they handled us all really well, allowing us space to feel this way while at the same time urging us to keep going. There were always teachers and/or aides to help us from 8AM-8PM, and without them, I'd have certainly given up. It was one of my instructors that ended up giving out my resume to one of their contacts which ultimately led to my first job a week after we graduated.

I am still in touch with my instructors and my classmates. I still reach out to ask simple questions of 'have you ever heard of...' type things and they still kindly respond with whatever knowledge they can give me. I've heard stories of other cohorts not really liking each other and scattering to the wind after graduation, but it's my impression that this is not the norm. Most are still in some sort of contact, and GA provides a space for its alum to continue to learn and grow together. My cohort is still very much in touch and I still look forward to hearing about how their careers are progressing. We all got jobs, most of us within 2 months, the last of us getting picked up a few months after graduation.

Denver Campus - UXDI: Our instructor was fantastic. He was great at making us work through our challenges and making sure we understood key UX principles. The program itself should look at the industry overall and warn people about exactly what it will take to get into the field. I've been applying for months now with the feedback being the same - not enough UX experience. For the amount of money paid, there should be a clear indication that you will need to do A LOT of work to find pro bono projects in order to gain experience. And that isn't always easy when you're working full time.

I interviewed GA team members prior to taking the course, explained my professional experience and they made it sound like there are tons of jobs and I wouldn't have a problem finding one. Which has been anything but the case. Be honest with students prior to their sigining up. Let them know all the leg work they will need to do in order to find a UX position in a tight market. It makes it feel like GA just wanted bodies in seats because what I was told prior to the course isn't the reality.

I did WDI in December of 2013 in the flatiron location in NYC. I loved my time there and felt it prepared me well for the real world. I was able to get a job right afterword and have had a very fulfilling career as a software engineer thus far. I have personally encouraged several people to also attend GA to change careers and I’ve watched them have very positive experiences as well. My husband has just enrolled and is about to do a WDI course in April in Santa Monica, CA. I love GA’s WDI program and what it allowed me to do. I do try to give people the full story and I have 2 big reservations about recommending GA.

My first reservation is to make sure that the person has the grit and persistence to feel extremely stupid/stuck/frustrated for a long time and still keep going because I think that’s what makes software development and engineering so rewarding but it’s definitely not for everyone. I feel that GA can do a better job screening the people that will not be able to successfully pivot into this career.

Secondly, I know that in the 5 years since I graduated, there have been many software companies that have been turned off from hiring recent GA grads because they were unsatisfied with their skills and it’s become much harder to get a job after graduation. I tell people to be prepared for a very long and self-motivated job hunt. I hope this helps and thank you for taking the time to collect this data. I believe GA is a real life saver and want as many people as possible to get the opportunity to have an amazing experience. One thing you do really well is hire incredible teachers, so keep up the great work!

My experience at the London campus is difficult to describe. It was the most intensive learning experience I’ve had. I chose this course over a Master's degree as I prefer the teaching style and it matches the way I learn; I learn by doing. I don’t think the experience is for everyone. People must be willing to commit the time and effort to get the most out of the course. Also, the course does not make you an expert. It’s starting point and you need to continue to learn, practice and advance. It is also worth thinking about what other experience/ skills differentiate you from others. Learning about your uniqueness and the value you bring to an employer is the key to getting a role.

I have studied the Web Development Immersive course at the London campus and found it to be completely inadequate. The course was not immersive at all. Rather than fast-paced, it was rushed. There are too many students in one class to justify paying 8000 GBP. The other half of the course which is the job seeking part was a total disaster. I felt that I required half my money back since half the course was ridiculously lacking value. The "instructor" during that part of the course did not know what she was talking about, the facility was totally understaffed AGAIN to justify paying 8000 GBP. She would tell us that she is always available but will only entertain questions on a thursday morning, how arbitrary. Therefore I did not get any help whatsoever from her. The assistant was a bit more helpful but just wasn't enough to justify paying such a huge amount.

This was the thought of all of my coursemates. Seeing how all of us injected around 200K GBP where the instructors would come in either hungover or not at all, because they would teach elsewhere, just shows that there was not enough spenditure going on where there is about 1M GBP going through the building at any given point.

I feel like I have wasted my money on there and I have emailed before to check if I can have at least a half refund because the course was dissatisfying. Not only that, the course had this agenda they were pushing which was a macOS only environment and anything else is rubbish. We were required to buy macbooks AND they told us during the job seeking part that the first thing we should ask is if the company is using macOS or Windows and that if the answer is Windows, to just stay away from that company. I find this totally inappropriate and have been a burden as most companies that I have applied for ACTUALLY preferred Windows environments. I know this review will not be published because it is quite accurate (It is, what you have asked for anyway) and I do hope you guys at least make it better for future students. Don't be this greedy company that will suck the money out of people who genuinely want to change their lives for the better.

It was good, great instructors (DT and Kasun), nice pace, a quite wide variety of topics were covered, morning coding challenges were interesting, the venue itself is ok. Stephanie did a great job preparing us for the job search. We did couple of offsites and now I work in one of the places we visited (Zendesk). I think maybe including common design patterns lectures and more hours on developer tools (like Git, VS Code, Developer console and Bash) would be great.

I was in the WDI course in the Singapore campus. Overall, the experience was excellent. From the initial admissions interview, I managed to get a sense of how things would be like, and I was not disappointed when my course began. The instructors were fairly knowledgeable in their fields, and were able to answer our queries in a way that even those of us who were new to coding were able to understand what they meant. Regarding some of the issues I had with the course personally, I believe it might be better for first-time instructors at the course to have more than 1 teaching assistant. This would allow him/her more room to move along with the lesson while the TAs can follow up with students who cannot understand their technical explanations. (Again, mainly the jargon for non-coders.)

I took the UXDI course in the fall of 2016 at the Santa Monica campus. The positives: my two professors Monish ** and Sofie **. They were absolutely helpful and super accommodating to those of us who were new to the tech community. We talk about having empathy in UX Design and they were extremely empathetic. My cohort was also very supportive of each other. If I could give the rating based on the professors and cohort alone, it would be 5 stars. Outcomes was kind of a letdown in some ways. Lisa ** was great, but she did the best she could handling two large cohorts by herself.

GA needs to have more people handling Outcomes in order to ensure the success of its graduates after their program is over. Which leads me to my biggest criticism of the company and why my rating is so low. The idea that the school give its applicants that 99% of people become employed after graduation is utter BS. What they didn’t tell us is that these “jobs” statistics also include brief contract gigs and unpaid internships. I cannot tell you how many interviews I went on where the interviewers told me that having GA on my resume was a bad thing.

I lacked the experience and the confidence coming out of my course (especially as someone who is much older than your average tech boot camp student). I don’t feel I was prepared enough and given a more realistic picture of what to expect when looking for a job. I don’t feel like I got my money’s worth, and I don’t feel that 11-12 weeks is nearly enough time to teach people the proper materials and skills needed to be successful in the current market. I currently don’t have a job in UX and am doing what I was doing before I took the course. Looking back, I wish I had been smarter with my money and my skills.

After graduation came the dreaded part of finding a job. Career coach not only made sure that we stayed in our course but motivated and provided emotional support when the search faced with obstacles. HK Campus - WDI. The teachers were great and so was the location. Everything else was terrible. One of the biggest draw was the careers counselor/officer but he ends up quitting about a couple of weeks of us starting the course. Then everyone else really involved with GA also quits and all these roles seem consolidated to people who don't give two craps about the student (the head was so proud that she didn't remember the students' names. What is that kind of attitude? Made us waste our times on all these "career questions" pamphlets with deadlines despite our own class deadlines. <- They were never reviewed with us in our meetings and I felt like in fact, it was just created to show head office that they were "doing something for the students".)

There was nothing followed up on us when we finished the course (because even the new hires who did care a bit were too busy to reach out). Prices went up even further after I left and now the campus is no longer in HK so there's no longer that I can reach out to as a resource. Glad I went to learn to code but the major advantages that I was willing to pay for and made me choose GA over another tech school were minimal in the end.

When I first starting looking into going to coding boot camps, I researched for weeks. From calling recruiters to reading about courses on Reddit. It was the attention and friendliness of the staff that attracted me to GA as well as a solid history of success from close friends. With no history in coding, other than an online course, I knew it was going to take dedication. I ended up quitting my job in order to fully dedicate my attention to the course. Beyond the hours spent on coding in the classroom, I spent countless hours after class and on the weekends focusing on still trying to understand everything. It was so much and all so fast. However I knew that I had to put in the hours in order to attempt to understand this new subject.

After finishing the course, I still felt like I didn’t know enough. However, Nicole **, the best ever, helped prepare me for reaching out and preparing for interviews. I took 3 courses at the Denver campus: Part time evening course in UX, UX Immersive Boot camp and Visual Design. I found these courses to have an inconsistent mix of quality - based mostly on the instructors involved. My first experience the part time course in UX was excellent and geared to beginners in UX with the instructor Amara ** focusing on the positive and promising aspects of what she saw in my work. I learned more from her than in the UX Immersive Boot camp, where GA was not honest about the fact that this course was geared to only highly experienced students in UX.

GA made it sound like you'd learn a new profession (UX) in 10 weeks - very misleading and one third of the class dropped out within the first month - with an opportunistic and predatory GA profiting from these misleading promises of fast employment after the end of their 10 week course. The UX Immersive instructor, Will **, was very impatient with me and indifferent to students with disabilities. The manager of the Denver GA, Brooke ** - nor the instructors - had any knowledge of Federal ADA law until I cut and pasted the portion of the GA school policy pertaining to Federal ADA in an email to her...They basically kicked me out of the course even though I complied with ALL extra work required of me - on top of GA's already greatly accelerated and advanced UX bootcamp.

The Visual Design online course was ok, except that the instructors did the absolute minimum to provide instruction to the students during the course, while promising to answer questions after the course ended. They did not. Why should they? They already got paid. I was very disappointed with the inconsistent quality of instructors at GA. Some of them are wonderful. Most are not and incapable of teaching from the perspective of a beginner in UX as well as being insensitive toward those students with disabilities.

GA's Immersive UX bootcamp was the worse class I ever took and this it was not at all geared towards beginners - the Denver GA was totally geared to making the money off of students who were not as advanced as others. They only focused on the most advanced students while leaving the others behind, while collecting their tuition money. Only the most advanced students found work via GA's UX Immersive bootcamp. For me it was a vast waste of my time, as it was like a FT job for which I did not get paid nor much benefit for my time. GA is opportunistic predator with beginning students due to their UX Immersive bootcamp.

I had a positive experience for the most part. My cohort was part of a test which involved a connected classroom between Seattle and LA. This feature of the class gave me mixed feelings. On one hand, it was nice having multiple instructors. On the other hand, it was strange having our teacher leave the class to present from another room in the same building... it would have been more beneficial to have him in the room with us while teaching as the audio quality of the connected classroom was poor. The instructor was somewhat tinny sounding and it was next to impossible to hear the students in LA when they spoke.

The content we learned seemed to be relevant to what employers are looking for mostly. Solidifying javascript and adding some computer science curriculum would have been helpful, but based on an email I received gently, will be added to courses beginning in March. One point to note is that having solid knowledge of CSS and HTML is of paramount importance as this seems to be a basic expectation of employers for front end, back end, and full stack roles. The learning environment at the Seattle location is good for learning. The classrooms are pretty modern and comfortable. There is a reasonable large lounge/work area. The only thing I didn't like about the lounge space was frequently being kicked out for special events.

I was at the SF campus for the Web Development Immersive. My teachers were great (I heard this wasn't the case for another WDI cohort going at the same time), but a lot of the surrounding programs, such as job placement, were really lacking. Job placement basically consisted of them coaching us on our resumes and a couple of interviews with people who seemed to not know that we were being told their company was hiring. I think they thought they were just there to provide some coaching or something. It took considerably longer for me and many members of my cohort to get jobs afterward than they'd originally estimated.

In addition, (and to be fair, I feel like this would have been hard for them to catch, as it was a time when a lot of people were changing their tech stacks), we were trained in technology that wasn't relevant to the market at the time we were looking for work. We learned Angular, Rails, and Jquery, which are all technologies that were considered old by the time it came around to me interviewing, with most companies having just gone to great efforts to get off of those technologies.

The 10-week UX Immersive course at the Washington, DC campus was an intensive program that matched classroom learning with immediate, real world applications to client projects. Highlight was the quality of instruction.

UX Design Immersive (4th Co-Hort) - As a career pivoter from Education I to Experience Design, I could not have made a better decision to have come to GA DC at the moment in time I did. Incredible instructor (Faz **) who opened the professional world and specifically this market and world class outcomes leader Seth ** (leader of outcomes at GA DC at the time, how wisely snatched up to serve as Global Outcomes Manager).

I took Web Development Immersive in NY in fall/winter of 2015. While I think overall, WDI left me in a great place to begin my career in technology (today, I am a software engineer with LinkedIn), I also think that It was lacking in several key areas. My wife also took WDI in Summer of 2017 and saw that several of the problems that I saw from my WDI cohort, remained. 1. The outcomes and end results of WDI are presented as being very linear when WDI is being sold to students but in reality, there's still a lot of uncertainty with results.

2. Students who are not progressing through WDI curriculum well are often pushed along, leading them to finish WDI without knowing enough to get a job as a Jr. Web Dev. I saw in three cohorts I had some level of activity in (1) my cohort, (2) a cohort I co-taught, and (3) in my wife's cohort. In each, there were a few students at the bottom of each class who took the class and were simply pushed along. These students leave WDI with a really negative experience and hurt the experience of the other students in the class (either because low performers are a drain on teacher resources or you just feel bad for them). 3. Instructor quality is not of a high enough standard. Instructors do not have enough training as educators. Instructors do not have enough relevant experience as industry professionals to advise students on how to get a job in industry.

I took the part-time UX design course at the Flatiron campus in NYC. With my Bachelor's degree in graphic design, I’d been working as a relatively traditional graphic designer before this course, spanning print and digital projects. After realizing a transition to UX design could be right for me, the class was a way for me to kickstart my portfolio and website to switch jobs. The class was really informative and motivational, I learned about UX research and techniques while working on one solid portfolio piece for the course. The in-class exercises were really valuable and I’m happy with how my project came out in the end. I really liked my instructor as well, and I attribute his great teaching skills to help motivate me in making a move. I felt the course was most valuable, at least to me, because I already have a strong background (and existing portfolio pieces) in visual design.

For someone who does not have a visual design or any kind of digital background, the full-time intensive course may be better as you will need more than 1 portfolio piece to start looking to change or pivot careers. I have now, after a few years have passed since finishing the course, made the transition to a digital product designer role and I’m looking forward to adding new skills still! Would definitely consider GA again.

Data Analytics - The instructor was great however there was a disconnect between the content team and the instructor. More in-depth prework is needed because what that give you is not enough nor enough time is given to complete the work. They express teaching the material but you need to know far more before enrolling.

The UX immersive course gave me what I needed to gain a portfolio of work and credibility in the field. Coming from a design background, I needed a way to gain practical project experience in digital formats. Supplemented by the classroom, it was a great way to practice new design methods and techniques. Combined with networking and hard work, this program helped me get where I needed to go. It was an essential part of my journey, and this program is what you put into it. Expect to work hard for results!

I attended the UXDI class in NYC at the end of 2018. My instructors were incredible and the class was great. I learned much more than just UXDI, but a great deal about myself and interacting with others. Vincent and Tamora are really the saving grace of the school. I am disappointed with the outcomes program, as I was ignored for the first month after I graduated and needed to contact the head of the outcomes program in NYC to finally get in contact with someone. Portfolio reviews are difficult to come by as they filled up immediately, whiteboard challenges are non-existent, there should be some sort of assistance with getting a mentor and additional internship work. When I realized that I was in fact being ignored by my advisor, I reached out to Macia, who has taken me on as my new advisor.

Helping people of different levels of experience find a new career is not something that should be looked at as a cookie cutter process- it needs to be individualized. It seems like there is a checklist that is being used to get people placed instead of really taking a thoughtful approach to the process

Sending out group emails telling students that they did not apply to enough jobs this week is not motivating nor professional. If there is a career advisor that is new to this, they should also have a mentor and someone guiding them as how to proceed with emails, meetings, and other interactions with the cohort that they are helping. Not being contacted for weeks at a time is not acceptable and not having your emails answered is also not professional. I feel like any jobs that I have gotten calls for, I have gotten on my own since there has been little communication with the outcomes team (before contacting Macia).

Once I contacted Macia, the portfolio reviews turned into group sessions (instead of individual - which was helpful, but you still don't get an individual approach), I met with Macia and she was able to get me the form to fill out for a mentor. These things should be planned ahead and available for all students without having to ask for it. There have been a few things that I have gotten invited to, but I know that others in my cohort have not been invited to. Not everyone is getting the same attention, and there are some that are making serious changes in our life and need guidance, motivation and help.

I also wish that when I was in the admissions process I was told that I would be taking upwards of a 40k pay cut. I don't think that I would have taken this class, I am about to be in thousands of dollars of debt between the class, living expenses while in the class and now being unemployed and then taking a huge pay cut. I talked to admissions about my strategy and they said, "That's a great idea... sign on the line..." Even telling them my salary and discussing what junior level salaries would be.

Even in outcomes, I have been told, "Oh, yes, the starting salary is x, but that is just for a foot in the door." I don't think that I can tell my NYC landlord that while I was making 6 figures before, now I am not... but it was just to get a foot in the door. Not acceptable. Where is the additional 40k coming from? Growing on trees? So, to wrap up - the class was amazing. The admissions and outcomes team need some overhauling to improve.

I attended the web development immersive course in New York City. When I decided to enroll I had a few years of experience in the startup tech industry but felt stalled in my career and salary because I was a woman in the space but also I didn’t have any coding experience. The software engineers were always most highly valued and I spent a lot of time working closely with them. That’s how I decided to attend GEneral assembly to learn how to code, to increase my value but also to be able to move to a role in development that would give me more autonomy and authority.

When deciding on a program, GA promised thorough course work that would take a beginner to developer with a lot of mentorship, instructional support and feedback. What I found in the course was none of those things. The material presented was hastily taught without checking for understanding, the instructors were immature and more focused on their social lives than teaching and there was absolutely zero feedback given on homework or even the larger projects. Even if the projects worked or homework was completed, we had no way to know if the code we were writing was good or acceptable for the working environment we were all working towards.

Outcomes left a lot to be desired. I didn’t need as much help with resume writing, LinkedIn crafting or soft skills interview prep but for a lot of the younger classmates, they didn’t really get that one on one attention that was advertised. Additionally, we never once practiced whiteboard style interviewing, which would be important since none of us had experienced that and since that interview technique is so different from actual coding.

At the end of the course, on our portfolio day, GA advertised that there would be employers attending to look at projects with the idea that they had open junior roles to fill. At our portfolio day, there was no one in attendance except for other GA students and alumni that hadn’t gotten jobs yet that hung around campus for the free working space.

After GA I was one of the first to get a job but ultimately went back to the role I was in before. I leveraged my GA experience to increase my salary and level but wasn’t able to attain the development role I wanted. I was more or less laughed out of whiteboarding interviews or never made it to the interview because of my lack of programming experience. Of my cohort, now 3 years out of the course, there are only 3-4 that went on to actually become developers or software engineers which is a sad fraction of the students.

It gave me the confidence in basic coding skills to build websites, and I am always looking at GA’s other offerings to improve upon my skills. I do wish, however, that we were taught a bit more about industry standards so that we would be more prepared to make a career change, but I understand that it is the immersive courses that do this. All in all, it was a great experience!

A great intro to the fundamentals of HTML and CSS, & Web Design in general. Mentors are helpful, and questions are answered quickly. You can set your own hours since it's online (which is perfect for working professionals or parents), but you must finish 80% of the course in order to receive the certificate of completion. Whether you have some prior experience with Web Design or are completely new to it, this is one of the best courses to learn the basics.

I took the multi-week intensive Data Science course at GA in San Francisco. I believe it was the 2nd time it was offered and therefore still iterating somewhat. I did very much enjoy the content — and the structure of the class was challenging, in that the assignments to do for homework usually required deducing additional skills that were not directly discussed in the prior lecture. This was a good thing, because it became an opportunity to truly learn through stumbling and making mistakes, not just practicing what was already known.

The instructor was relatively junior to Data science himself, but that was to be expected I think for the newish course. This only was a problem in a few instances where I wanted to dig deeper into why a particular algorithm might be more desirable; the course was less concerned with the mathematical underpinnings as much as the best tactical strategies for modeling problems.

I attended the UXDI course at GA in February '18 at the Chicago campus. My main issue is the level of students entering the class and the number of students. We spent a lot of time around subjects I was already familiar with but was very new for students with no background in design. This was really frustrating for me and I do not believe that students with different levels of experience should be placed in the same classroom; it isn't fair to either category of students. The other issue was there were only 5 students in my cohort. On the one hand, it was great because there was so much extra attention with teachers but on the other hand it was awful because our cohort did not get along with one another. It was a very toxic environment and affected all of our learning. Considering these two factors I ultimately felt more like a dollar sign to GA than a student.

I've also had the pleasure of teaching at GA (remote) and can say that similar issues happened there at well. I worked closely with the students as an Instructional Associate for a Visual Design course. Being on the other end of things really emphasized how students were treated more as a dollar sign than an individual learner. Not everyone learns the same. Not everyone is at the same level/comes in with the same experience.

Making these complaints on behalf of students often resulted in a "you can't please everyone" response. I don't think that is good enough. These problems could have been solved with classes geared towards students at different levels and could produce better experiences. This was also a cohort of 24 students - which is a ridiculous amount of students. When I mentioned being shocked by that amount (and the workload that came with it) my manager boasted about there have been much larger classrooms and this was the average. I ended spending many more hours per week (nearly 4x what was expected) to give students the attention they needed to grow and learn the material. I don't regret doing that, as a student I had empathy for how the process works and how the individual isn't prioritized.

I went to the Providence, RI campus. The state of RI funds this program, so it wan't a hard decision as to whether I would do it or not. Before I went, I don't think I would pay more than $10k for the program. But after having gone through it, I think it is worth it. I finished 3 weeks ago and have been starting the job search, so I guess that will determine whether it was worth it or not. What I will say about the program is, you get out what you put into it. You have to work hard to make it work for you. You also have to be committed to every detail of the job search process because there are still a lot of companies that either don't want to hire Juniors or don't think a boot camp can give you enough info to do the job. This can change your life. But changing your life isn't easy, so neither is this.

Digital marketing: The course was rushed, teacher was good. It was 2 nights per week. Again it was rushed, we did not cover necessary things in the promised syllabus—this was not due to the teacher, but due to the fact GA is apparently for profit. Many in the class felt they did not get their money’s worth. I complained, had to go on Twitter to get GA’s attention as no one would return my calls. To shut me up they “gave” me 3 boot camps in the areas that were not properly covered. There was frustration on the part of the teacher and classmates on how little time was provided to cover the curriculum. I had the same experience with the boot camps. It all felt like a “bums rush” to get us in and out as quickly as possible and grab our money. Very disappointed. Even more so now when I see that the prices for classes have tripled. It’s a faux degree mill.

I’ve taken both FEWD and WDI at the NYC campus, with the aim of transitioning careers to front-end web development. FEWD was a great chance to get my feet wet, and I loved the course - so I jumped to WDI. WDI was also fantastic, and I felt like when I left class I had a good base to move forward. Having said that, my search was ultimately unsuccessful; but the market in which I graduated was tough - a huge amount of competition coupled with some negative experiences companies have had with other schools’ graduates not being as prepared as they should be to expect to enter the workforce.
